Accessible Wellness: A statistically meaningless project

Meet Margaret

Hi, I’m Margaret. I live & work in rural South West France with my husband, Jack.

At Manoir Mouret we love running accessible wellness retreats led by great professionals - nutritionists, holistic chefs, movement teachers etc. I'm not a health or exercise professional but I am really curious, what does “wellness” actually mean to me? Over the coming weeks I’m going on a personal, lay persons exploration of “wellness” & will share what I discover here in this blog.

So hi, to give some context, this is me!

Some largely chronological facts and figures about me….

  • Born in Kent in Southern England in the great freeze of 1963.

  • Pretty traditional, happy childhood (7 to 18 years old) in Bolton in North West England.

  • University in the early 80s in what was at the time the People’s Republic of Sheffield – a full student grant (no loans), housing benefit, subsidised travel etc. etc. – sorry to rub it in if you’re from a younger generation.

  • Worked as a lawyer, mainly in London, for 25 years.

  • Travelled for work a lot, met some great people, had fun, worked hard, burnt the candle at both ends, far from a balanced life but I enjoyed very nearly all of it.

  • Met Jack on a holiday in 1998, married in 1999.

  • 2010 retired from the law in my 40s, spent a year travelling round the world, bought a small (about 40,000 bottles a year) vineyard in France (2012, another story), made great wine for nearly a decade, bought Mouret (2019).

  • No children or other dependent relatives.

  • 2 gorgeous Parsons Terriers, Harry and Coco.

  • 2023/4- studying for a diploma in nutrition from the College of Naturopathic Medicine.

  • I love friends & family (old & new), our dogs, dogs in general, our vegetable garden, eating great food, cooking, being outside, good films, tennis, learning new things, having fun, being serious. I have definite geeky tendencies. I am very bad at quizzes.

Acknowledgement & Gratitude

I appreciate that this project could look very indulgent given the many people who are struggling to secure even their most basic needs and the terrible things that are happening in the world.

I am grateful every day for what I have and I don’t take it for granted. None of us know what’s in the future but today I have the resources, time, and health to enable me to do this project. This is a personal journey. Wellness and the steps we’re able to take to support it will look different for each of us. The phrase personalised nutrition is quite popular at the moment but perhaps more accurately it should be personalised wellness, something to muse on over the coming weeks. I hope that there may be some things that are of wider interest but, ultimately, this project is personal and therefore statistically meaningless.
